The city, quietly

City Houses

Eight cities and walled towns held at a distance: a palazzo on the Grand Canal, a hotel on Florence’s Piazza Santa Maria Novella, high floors above Tokyo’s palace gardens, the Crown Building in Manhattan, antique houses in a Shanghai camphor forest, the carved courtyards of Kathmandu, the ramparts of Galle Fort and a palm oasis beside the Marrakech Medina.

The idea

City Houses

A great city, or an old walled town, is most generous when there is somewhere quiet to come back to. These are the city stays we reach for when the address should feel like a private house: historic rooms or high floors, a spa within the walls, and the noise kept at a civilised distance.

The collection suits travelers who come for museums, music and tables but want calm between them: couples on a cultural week, families on a first visit to a great city, and anyone beginning or ending a longer journey with a few nights in town.

Venice. Aman Venice occupies a restored palazzo on the Grand Canal, with historic rooms, canal light and a garden to come back to after a morning in the sestieri. See Venice.

Florence. Hotel L’Orologio Florence looks onto Piazza Santa Maria Novella and the marble facade of its basilica, with breakfast in a Renaissance loggia and the Duomo a short walk away. See Florence.

Tokyo. Aman Tokyo holds the top six floors of The Otemachi Tower, with views across the Imperial Palace Gardens and, on clear days, Mount Fuji, and a spa pool high above the streets. See Tokyo.

New York. Aman New York brings suite-scale living to the Crown Building in Midtown, with spa floors above Fifth Avenue and the Jazz Club for the evenings. See New York.

Shanghai. At the edge of the city, Amanyangyun sets Ming and Qing courtyard houses, relocated timber by timber, in a camphor forest in Minhang, and keeps the Bund a car ride away. See Shanghai.

Kathmandu. The Dwarika’s Hotel has been the city’s living museum since 1972, with brick courtyards of rescued Newari woodwork and the temple squares of the Valley close at hand. See Nepal.

Galle. Amangalla occupies a historic house inside the UNESCO-listed ramparts of Galle Fort, with verandahs, high-ceilinged rooms and harbour air. See Galle.

Marrakech. Amanjena sits in the Palmeraie outside the Medina walls, its pavilions set around a still bassin, with the souks within reach for the evenings you want them. See Marrakech.

How we plan a city stay. We look first at where your days will be spent, then choose the room: a canal view in Venice, a high floor facing the palace gardens in Tokyo, a garden pavilion in Marrakech. Museums, concerts and tables are arranged before arrival, so the hours in the city go to what you came for, and the hotel stays a calm place to return to between them.

Most city stays work best at three or four nights, as the opening or closing chapter of a longer trip: Florence before Chianti, Tokyo before Kyoto in Japan Rituals, Galle before the beach at Tangalle. Spring and autumn suit almost every city here. Cherry blossom in Tokyo, autumn in Kathmandu and the winter sun of Marrakech are held earliest, along with major holidays and festivals.

Many city weeks close in the country: Mediterranean Hills follows Florence into the olive country, and Temple Paths carries Shanghai and Kathmandu on toward the temples.
