Amansara
Amansara occupies a masterpiece of 1960s New Khmer architecture on the outskirts of Siem Reap: originally commissioned in the Sihanouk era for guests, now Aman’s house in Cambodia…
Stone, dawn & stillness
Houses at the edge of Asia’s great temple landscapes and old towns (Angkor, Borobudur, Luang Prabang, the temple hills of Hangzhou, Ubud, the dzongs of Bhutan, the Kathmandu Valley and old Lijiang) where the day starts early on stone and ends in shade.
The idea
Some places ask to be met early, while the stone is cool, the light is low and the crowds have not yet come. These houses sit close to the great temple landscapes and old towns of Asia and are paced around them: dawn on the path, midday in shade, and evening at a house that feels like part of the story.
In Siem Reap, Amansara occupies a 1960s residence that is itself part of the Cambodia story. Angkor’s temple circuits are paced for heat and crowds (sunrise where it matters, quieter sites when the main crowd peaks) with the circular dining room and the spa to return to.
On Central Java’s Kedu Plain, Amanjiwo is a circular stone amphitheatre of suites oriented toward Borobudur, where temple dawns and volcanic horizons set the rhythm of each day.
In Luang Prabang, Amantaka keeps French-colonial courtyards, high wooden ceilings and pool suites steps from the Mekong temples and the town’s morning alms rhythm, inside its UNESCO streets.
In the temple hills near Hangzhou, Amanfayun is a tea village of stone dwellings in camphor shade, where days move along village paths toward temple visits, tea rituals and the spa.
Above the Ayung River gorge near Ubud, Amandari follows the scale of a Balinese village, its thatched pavilions a quiet hinge for temple circuits, craft hours and ceremony days that begin from Kedewatan rather than a beach road.
In Bhutan, Amankora is a journey rather than a single house: a circuit of lodges across the kingdom’s valleys, from Paro and Thimphu to Punakha, with dzongs, temples and trail days matched to the season, the festival calendar and your walking appetite.
In Nepal, The Dwarika’s Hotel is Kathmandu’s living museum of Newari craft, its courtyards set with carved woodwork rescued from the Valley’s old houses, and its mornings begin with a dawn walk to Pashupatinath. An hour east, Dwarika’s Sanctuary looks from the hills of Dhulikhel to the Himalaya, with a morning journey to the monks of Namobuddha for those who want the temple path to continue.
In Yunnan, Amandayan looks over the Naxi old town of Lijiang beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The old town lanes are best walked early; the rest of the day can hold Dongba cultural hours, the light at Black Dragon Pool, and courtyard quiet with the spa after altitude days.
