Rest & ritual

Wellness Retreats

Stays where wellbeing is the reason for the journey: Ayurveda in the Himalaya, onsen above Ago Bay, a desert spa in Utah, three spa floors in Manhattan and healing traditions from Bali to Phuket.

The idea

Wellness Retreats

Some journeys are taken to rest properly: to sleep well, move every day, eat simply and come home lighter. This collection gathers the stays where wellbeing is the reason for the journey rather than a room beside the pool, each with practitioners, waters or programs of real depth.

The traditions differ more than the quality. Ayurveda in the Himalayan foothills, onsen bathing above a Japanese bay, Thai healing practice on the Andaman, hot springs below a Costa Rican volcano and a desert spa in Utah each ask something different of the days, and we match the house to what you hope to change, whether that is sleep, fitness, stress or simply the pace of a year.

Most of these stays also sit inside a longer journey. Amanpuri and Keemala belong to our Southeast Asia guide, Amanemu closes the week in our Japan Rituals collection, and Dwarika’s Sanctuary pairs with Kathmandu in our Nepal guide. For meditation, blessing and pilgrimage, continue to Sacred Journeys.

The chapters

Where the rest begins

Four ways into the collection, each opened by a house that takes wellbeing as seriously as the view.

Traveler questions

Before you choose

  • What makes a stay a wellness retreat rather than a resort with a spa? Depth. Each house here has practitioners, waters or programs that can shape a whole stay: resident Ayurvedic doctors, structured immersions, hot springs, or a spa large enough to plan the days around.
  • How long should a wellness stay be? Five nights is a sensible minimum for a program to take hold. Amanpuri’s Wellness Immersions begin at three nights, and its intensive programs, with medical consultations, at five.
  • Can a partner who does not want a program come too? Yes. These houses suit a mixed couple well: one follows a program while the other walks, dives or reads, and Amanpuri’s Immersions can include a travel partner who is not on the program.
  • When is the best time to go? Wellness travels well out of season. Spa days fill the green months in Phuket and Bali, onsen bathing at Amanemu is at its best in the cool months, and Dhulikhel’s clearest mountain views come in autumn and spring.
