At the southern end of Argentina, on the island of Tierra del Fuego, the last of the Andes meet the sea. Ushuaia, the city at the end of the world, sits between their snowy peaks and the Beagle Channel, with forests of lenga, ñire and coihue on the slopes, peat bogs and glacial lagoons in the valleys, and cormorants, sea lions and penguins on the islands offshore.
We open Tierra del Fuego through Los Cauquenes Resort + Spa + Experiences, in the first row of the Beagle Channel at Bahía Cauquén, 7 km from the city: 48 rooms and suites of lenga wood and stone, the Spa del Fin del Mundo, and a boat of its own, the Akawaia.
Days here are spent on the water, in the forest and in the snow. Sail to the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse and the penguin colony of Martillo Island, ride the End of the World Train into Tierra del Fuego National Park to Lapataia Bay, where the Pan-American Highway ends, climb toward Martial Glacier or walk to Laguna Esmeralda, cross Garibaldi Pass to Lakes Escondido and Fagnano, and in winter take a snowmobile through the Tierra Mayor Valley.
Our Argentina guide joins the end of the world with the vineyards of Mendoza and the Uco Valley, reached by way of Buenos Aires, for a journey that runs from the Andes to the Beagle Channel.
