Central Java holds two of the great monuments of Asia. Borobudur, the ninth century Buddhist temple on the Kedu Plain, and Prambanan, its Hindu contemporary, are both World Heritage Sites, and the volcanoes Merapi and Merbabu rise above the rice fields between them. Yogyakarta, the old royal city, keeps a living court and a strong tradition of batik, music and dance.
Our stay here is Amanjiwo, a circular stone house in the Menoreh hills facing Borobudur across the plain. Suites open onto terraces toward the temple, some with their own pools, and the day begins early, with Borobudur in the cool of the morning and the afternoon left to the house.
Amanjiwo suits travelers who come for history and quiet: couples, families with older children, and anyone adding culture to a Bali beach week. It is part of our Temple Paths collection. It pairs naturally with Ubud or East Bali, and with Siem Reap for a longer journey through the temples of Asia. Our Indonesia guide covers the archipelago.
