The Costalegre is the long, lightly settled coast of Jalisco between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo, where the Sierra Madre comes down to the Pacific in dry forested hills, river lagoons and beaches that can run for a kilometre or more without a building in sight. There are few towns and fewer roads off the coastal highway, and much of the shore is held in private estates and nature reserves.
We open the Costalegre through Las Alamandas, a private reserve of more than two thousand acres about two and a half hours south of Puerto Vallarta. Eighteen suites and villas in casitas of pink, cobalt and saffron stand among palms and lawns above the sea, with four private beaches, the San Nicolás river lagoon and an organic orchard that supplies the kitchen.
