East Bali

East Bali’s Manggis coast: three-tier pools above the Lombok Strait when Bali should feel like cliff shade and ancient kingdom country.

East Bali

East Bali is the island’s older, quieter side: rice terraces climbing toward Mount Agung, water palaces, Bali Aga villages and black sand coves along the Lombok Strait. The pace is unhurried, and the days divide easily between culture in the hills and time by the sea.

Our stay here is Amankila, on the hillside above Manggis near Candidasa. Suites in thatched pavilions look out over the strait, the three-tiered pool steps down toward the water, and a beach club sits on the sand below with its own long pool.

Amankila suits couples, families who want both beach and culture, and travelers returning to Bali who want a different island from the south. It combines well with Ubud in the hills, with villa days at Nusa Dua, or with temples in Central Java. It is part of our Island Sanctuaries collection, and our Indonesia guide covers the wider archipelago.

Why visit

A reason to make the journey.

  • The strait in view Wide sea views toward Lombok, with Mount Agung behind and fishing boats on the water.
  • Culture close by Water palaces, village temples and the Sidemen valley within an easy drive.
  • Pool and beach The three-tiered pool on the hill and a beach club on the sand, so the day can be either.

When and how

Light, season, and the arrival

Each season keeps its own calendar. We plan the transfer around it.

Best time to visit

When the light is right

The dry season, roughly April to October, brings clear views over the strait and the best beach days. From November to March the hills are greener, with afternoon rain that usually passes quickly.

Seasonality

When to go

July, August and the Christmas weeks fill first. Bali’s ceremonial calendar, including Galungan and Nyepi, shapes the island year round; on Nyepi, the Day of Silence, the whole island pauses for twenty-four hours.

Airport / logistics

Arriving without hurry

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is the gateway. The drive east takes about one and a half to two hours depending on traffic. Many guests begin in Ubud and finish on the coast, which keeps the transfers short.

Month by month

The best months for East Bali

  • Peak
  • Quiet
  • Rainfall

Luxury experiences

Hours we would keep

  • Tirta Gangga The royal water garden of Karangasem, its pools and fountains best seen early in the day.
  • Tenganan and Sidemen A Bali Aga village known for its double ikat weaving, then a drive through the rice terraces of Sidemen.
  • The reef below Snorkelling or diving off the coast, with the beach club as a base.

Traveler questions

Before your East Bali week

  • How far is Amankila from Ubud? About an hour and a half by road, so it combines easily with a few nights at Amandari.
  • Is the beach good for swimming? The beach club sits on a sheltered stretch of sand with its own pool. Sea conditions vary with the season, and the pools are always there when the water is rough.
  • What is Nyepi? The Balinese Day of Silence, usually in March. The airport closes and the island pauses for twenty-four hours, so travel is planned around it.
