Hvar lies off the Dalmatian coast between Split and Dubrovnik, long and narrow, with pine and olive on its shores, vineyards and lavender in its interior, and St Nicholas, its highest peak, above them. Greek settlers from Paros founded Pharos, today’s Stari Grad, in the fourth century BC, and the field pattern they laid out on the Stari Grad Plain is still farmed and protected by UNESCO. The island holds six UNESCO listings in all, from the Za Križen night procession to the agave lace made by its Benedictine nuns, and Hvar town keeps one of the oldest public theatres in Europe.
On the quieter north shore, in Maslinica Bay, Maslina Resort Villas keeps three private houses among the pines, each with a heated pool and garden, a short walk along the coast from Stari Grad and its harbour.
