Anambas Islands

The Anambas Islands are a scatter of forested islands, reefs, and clear lagoons in Indonesia’s Riau Islands, far from the country’s better-known shores. Bawah Reserve occupies six of them (Bawah, Muerba, Sanggah, Elang, Lidi, and Batu Tokong) around three marine reserve lagoons and thirteen beaches.

We hold the Anambas for travelers who want coral gardens and forest trails more than a scene: turtles on the house reef, a Keruing tree some five centuries old, and a night sky dark enough for real stargazing. Arrival is by amphibious seaplane, landing in the main lagoon.

Bawah Reserve suits couples and honeymooners who want overwater living without a crowd, families with confident swimmers, and travelers who care about conservation as much as comfort. Meals, spa treatments and most activities are part of the stay, so the days shape themselves. Read more on our Bawah Reserve page.

It belongs to two of our collections, Overwater & Lagoon and Island Sanctuaries, and features in our Journal on the world’s best private island resorts. For another lagoon in the Indian Ocean, see Randheli Island in the Maldives, or our Indonesia guide for the wider archipelago.

Elsewhere in Indonesia, the reefs of North Sulawesi and the island waters of Moyo Island continue the story beneath the surface.

Why visit

A reason to make the journey.

  • Six islands, three lagoons Thirteen beaches and a hundred hectares of primary forest around just thirty-six suites and villas, remoteness with room to breathe.
  • A living reef Green and Hawksbill turtles and bumphead parrotfish on the house reef; coral nurseries and turtle patrols led by resident marine biologists.
  • Forest and stars Jungle trails to a 50-metre Keruing tree, permaculture gardens that feed the kitchens, and skies without light pollution.

When and how

Light, season, and the arrival

Each season keeps its own calendar. We plan the transfer around it.

Best time to visit

When the light is right

March to November brings the calmest seas and most sunshine, and July to September is turtle-nesting season.

Seasonality

When to go

Calm-sea months and festive weeks fill first, and December is festive on the island. Bawah Reserve closes annually for maintenance (14 November to 18 December in 2026).

Airport / logistics

Arriving without hurry

Seaplanes from Batam land in Bawah’s main lagoon. Luggage is limited to 15 kg per guest including hand luggage, and early departures make a night in Singapore or Batam beforehand the wise choice.

Month by month

The best months for Anambas Islands

  • Peak
  • Shoulder
  • Quiet
  • Rainfall

Seasons follow the notes above. Average daily high and monthly rainfall for 2015 to 2024 from ERA5 reanalysis, via Open-Meteo.

Luxury experiences

Hours we would keep

  • Aura Spa Explorer A boat to a secluded spa balé above the sea, for treatments with only ocean and forest for company.
  • Twilight and island dinners Candlelit tables on The Lookout, castaway picnics on Coconut Beach, and private dinners across the islands.
  • Elang, an island apart Six villas, a clubhouse, and a saltwater infinity pool, with beaches reserved for Elang guests, taken as a whole-island stay.

Traveler questions

Before your Anambas Islands week

  • How do you get to Bawah Reserve? From Singapore, a short ferry to Batam, then an amphibious seaplane of about eighty minutes that lands in Bawah’s main lagoon. The whole journey takes about four hours.
  • When is the best time to visit the Anambas Islands? March to November brings the calmest seas. Turtles nest from July to September, and the resort closes each year for maintenance in late autumn.
