Moyo Island

Moyo Island lies in the Flores Sea off the north coast of Sumbawa, east of Bali and Lombok. Much of the island is a protected nature reserve: tamarind and banyan forest, waterfalls that pool into turquoise basins, and reefs that drop away just off the beach. There are no roads to speak of and no other resorts, which is the point.

Our stay here is Amanwana, Aman’s camp of luxury tents on the shore, some facing the sea and some set under the jungle canopy. Each tent has a proper bed, a bathroom and air conditioning beneath the canvas, and the day turns on the water: diving and snorkelling on the house reef and nearby walls, boat trips to Satonda and its crater lake, and treks inland to the Mata Jitu falls.

Moyo suits divers and snorkellers, couples who want somewhere genuinely removed, and families with older children who are happy with a camp rather than a villa. It sits in our Wild Frontiers collection, and pairs well with a few nights in Ubud or East Bali before or after. For the archipelago by sea, see Indonesia Voyages, or our Indonesia guide for the whole country.

Why visit

A reason to make the journey.

  • A protected island Forest, waterfalls and reef on an island with no other resorts and very little traffic of any kind.
  • Water at the door Coral walls and reef within a short boat ride, with diving and snorkelling for every level.
  • A camp, not a hotel Canvas, timber and a small number of tents, so the island stays quiet and the staff know every guest.

When and how

Light, season, and the arrival

Each season keeps its own calendar. We plan the transfer around it.

Best time to visit

When the light is right

The dry season, roughly May to October, brings calmer seas, clearer water and the most comfortable trekking. The wet months, roughly December to March, are greener, with heavier rain and rougher crossings.

Seasonality

When to go

July, August and the Christmas holidays fill first. Sea conditions decide dive sites day by day, so plans stay flexible. The camp keeps a seasonal calendar.

Airport / logistics

Arriving without hurry

From Bali, a short regional flight reaches Sumbawa, then a drive and a boat crossing reach Moyo, the better part of half a day in all. Small aircraft allow modest luggage, so soft bags are wise, and a night in Bali on either side keeps the connections calm.

Month by month

The best months for Moyo Island

  • Peak
  • Shoulder
  • Quiet
  • Rainfall

Seasons follow the notes above. Average daily high and monthly rainfall for 2015 to 2024 from ERA5 reanalysis, via Open-Meteo.

Luxury experiences

Hours we would keep

  • Reef mornings Dive and snorkel on the house reef and nearby walls with the camp’s own dive team, timed to tides and visibility.
  • Mata Jitu falls A boat along the coast and a walk through the forest to tiered pools for a swim in fresh water.
  • Satonda by boat A day to the neighbouring island and its crater lake, with snorkelling on the reef on the way back.

Traveler questions

Before your Moyo Island week

  • How do you reach Moyo Island? Fly to Bali, then take a short regional flight to Sumbawa, followed by a drive and a boat crossing to the island. A night in Bali on either side keeps the journey relaxed.
  • Is Amanwana suitable for families? Yes, for families who enjoy the outdoors. Children who swim and snorkel tend to love the reef and the waterfalls, and the tents are comfortable, with air conditioning and proper bathrooms.
