Mustique

Mustique villas are the reason most travelers come. The island sits in St Vincent and the Grenadines between Bequia and Canouan, about three miles long and a mile and a half wide, some 1,400 acres of hills, bluffs and white bays. It still behaves like a private island: access is limited, the roads are quiet, and nearly everyone stays in a private villa rather than a hotel room.

Each house is privately owned and built to its owner’s taste, from early Oliver Messel designs to open contemporary pavilions, and many are let through The Mustique Company’s rental program. A villa comes staffed, with the use of a vehicle for the island roads, and the better houses sit above Macaroni, Endeavour, Lagoon or L’Ansecoy. The day opens on your own terrace; the evening may end at Basil’s Bar on Britannia Bay.

We plan Mustique as a villa week first: the house, the arrival, the tables, and a boat day when the Grenadines should widen. Pair it with Canouan, where Mandarin Oriental, Canouan brings hotel dining and a spa into the same week, or read our guide to the Caribbean for the wider sea. For the holiday weeks, see Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean.

Why visit

A reason to make the journey.

  • A private island, still private The Mustique Company, owned largely by the island’s homeowners, looks after the island, and building has been kept to a limited number of private homes since the late 1960s. Discretion is how the island works. Houses keep their own shorelines and their own hours.
  • Villa culture over hotel corridors There are only two small hotels, The Cotton House on Endeavour Bay and Firefly above Britannia Bay. Everyone else stays in a private villa: a hillside terrace, a pool above the water, and a staff who learn the week. The house comes first; the island fills in around it.
  • Houses with their own character Some houses date from the island’s first years, when the set designer Oliver Messel shaped its look; others are contemporary pavilions in stone and glass. Your advisor reads each house for bedrooms, stairs, beach access, and the view you want to wake to.
  • Beaches that keep their own pace Macaroni’s Atlantic roll, Endeavour’s calmer water below The Cotton House, Lagoon Bay and L’Ansecoy to the north, and Britannia Bay where the island gathers. We match the shore to your villa, not the beach that looks busiest in a photograph.
  • Island tables and island rituals Basil’s Bar over the water at Britannia Bay, a long lunch at The Cotton House Beach Café, dinner on the Veranda, a quieter table at Firefly, or the cook at your own house. Reservations travel with the villa plan so evenings stay effortless.
  • Grenadines sequencing, written by hand The arrival on the short Mustique airstrip, the villa transfer, and personal requests are coordinated as one plan. Pair Canouan when a Mandarin Oriental stay belongs beside the Mustique villa week.

When and how

Light, season, and the arrival

Each season keeps its own calendar. We plan the transfer around it.

Best time to visit

When the light is right

December through April is the dry season: clearer skies, steady trade winds, and the island at its most social, with Christmas, New Year and Easter the most sought after villa weeks. May and June are often lovely and quieter. Shoulder months suit travelers who prefer fewer boats on the horizon and a quieter hour at Basil’s.

Seasonality

When to go

Peak villa demand concentrates in the winter holiday window and peak dry season. Christmas and midsummer are best reserved early. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the greater risk from August to October; many houses stay open through it.

Airport / logistics

Arriving without hurry

There is no long runway on Mustique. Most guests fly into Barbados (BGI) or St Lucia (UVF) and connect on a small scheduled or private aircraft to Mustique (MQS). The airstrip has no lights, so flights land in daylight, and we time the international arrival so the connection is made the same day. The villa team meets you at the strip. Arrival by yacht is possible at Britannia Bay.

Luxury experiences

Hours we would keep

  • A cove that belongs to the house Loungers set for the stay, not a public beach schedule. We ask which shore the villa favors before we write the day, and whether the staff should bring lunch down to the sand.
  • Dinner without a queue The Veranda at The Cotton House for West Indian flavors cooked over flame, the Beach Café for grilled fish with your feet in the sand, Firefly for a hillside table, Basil’s for the dancing. Celebration notes welcome.
  • The Grenadines at boat pace A day sail toward Bequia or the Tobago Cays when the house and the weather agree, with snorkeling over reef and a late lunch on board.
  • Court, saddle, and island roads Morning tennis at the Mustique Tennis Club, a ride from the island’s stables, or a mule, the small buggies everyone drives here, along quiet roads to a picnic above Macaroni.
  • Wellness at island pace The Cotton House spa works with Bamford’s organic skincare, and treatments can come to the villa on request. A swim before the heat, an early walk to the island’s high points, and yoga on the terrace fill the rest.
  • Families and celebrations Larger houses hold multigenerational weeks well: calmer leeward beaches, a tennis lesson, a gentle ride. For a birthday or an anniversary, dinner at the house or on the sand is arranged with the villa team, and larger gatherings are cleared with the island in advance.

Traveler questions

Before your Mustique week

  • Where is Mustique, and how big is it? Mustique is in St Vincent and the Grenadines, between Bequia and Canouan, about 17 miles south of St Vincent. It is roughly three miles long and a mile and a half wide, around 1,400 acres, with a small airstrip, a handful of beaches, and quiet paved roads linking the houses.
  • How do you get to Mustique? Most travelers fly to Barbados or St Lucia and connect on a small scheduled or private aircraft to Mustique; St Vincent is another gateway. The airstrip is short and unlit, so flights land in daylight. Your advisor times the international arrival so the connection is made the same day, and the villa team meets you on arrival.
  • What are Mustique villas like? Every villa is a privately owned home, designed to its owner’s taste, from Oliver Messel era houses to contemporary pavilions. Houses come staffed and with the use of a vehicle for the island roads. Sizes range from intimate two bedroom houses to estates for larger families, many with a pool above the sea.
  • When is the best time to visit Mustique? December through April brings the driest weather and the busiest social calendar, and the holiday weeks are held early. May and June are quieter and often beautiful. Hurricane season runs from June to November; many houses remain open, and we confirm house and flight calendars before holding those dates.
  • Where can you eat on Mustique beyond the villa? Basil’s Bar sits over the water at Britannia Bay. The Cotton House has the Veranda for dinner and the Beach Café on Endeavour Bay for long lunches, and Firefly keeps a small hillside dining room. Many evenings are simply dinner at the house, cooked by the villa’s own staff.
  • Is Mustique good for families and celebrations? Yes. Calm leeward beaches, tennis, riding and boat days suit children and grandparents alike, and the island’s quiet roads make for an easy week. Birthdays and anniversaries are often held at the villa; larger gatherings need the island’s approval in advance, which your advisor requests early.
