Madikwe lies in the far north of South Africa’s North West Province, against the border with Botswana, and it is one of the country’s great malaria free safari reserves. Its landscapes run from dense bushveld and open grassland to waterholes and the riverine forest of the Marico River, after which the reserve is named.
The wildlife is the draw, above all the famous Madikwe Top 10: the Big Five, together with cheetah, wild dog, hyena, hippo and giraffe. More than 350 bird species are recorded here, and because there is no malaria, families with young children can come at any time of year.
Our stay is Jaci’s Private Lodge, family owned since 2000 on the banks of the Marico River: ten safari suites, two private villas and a five bedroom house, with a water level hide reached by tunnel and a sleepout under the stars. Madikwe sits easily alongside the rest of South Africa and our Wild Frontiers collection.
