Tangalle

Tangalle is Sri Lanka’s deep south: wide crescent bays, coconut groves and fishing harbours, quieter than the west coast and closer to the island’s great wildlife parks. The sea here is the main event, and the pace of the town suits it.

Our stay here is Amanwella, set on a cliff above a crescent bay among coconut palms. Contemporary suites have terraces and plunge pools facing the ocean, the long infinity pool runs along the clifftop, and paths lead straight down to the sand.

Amanwella suits couples, families and anyone who wants the beach to be the centre of a Sri Lanka journey. For history and walking, Amangalla inside the ramparts of Galle Fort is a little over an hour along the coast, and the two make a natural pair. Amanwella sits in our Island Sanctuaries collection, and Amangalla in City Houses.

For the wider journey through Sri Lanka, with the seasons, the routes between stays and every house we keep there, see our Sri Lanka country guide.

  • Fort and beach in one trip Galle Fort and Amangalla a short drive away, for a week that moves between history and sea.

When and how

Light, season, and the arrival

Each season keeps its own calendar. We plan the transfer around it.

Best time to visit

When the light is right

December to April is the season on the south coast, with drier days and calmer seas. From May to September the southwest monsoon brings rougher water and showers, though the island’s east coast is then at its best.

Seasonality

When to go

Christmas, New Year and February fill first. In the monsoon months, the pool replaces the sea for swimming. Blue whales pass off the southern coast in the winter months.

Airport / logistics

Arriving without hurry

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo is the gateway. The drive to Tangalle takes roughly three to four hours by the Southern Expressway, and domestic air or helicopter transfers can shorten the journey when schedules allow.

  • Turtles at Rekawa An evening on the beach at Rekawa, where turtles come ashore to nest.

Traveler questions

Before your Tangalle week

  • How far is Tangalle from Colombo? Roughly three to four hours by road, by the Southern Expressway. Domestic air or helicopter transfers can shorten the journey when schedules allow.
  • Can we combine Amanwella and Amangalla? Yes. Galle Fort is a little over an hour along the coast, so many guests spend a few nights in the fort and then move to the beach.
  • When is the best time for whale watching? Blue whales are most often seen off the south coast between about December and April, when the sea is calm.
