Ubud

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali: rice terraces, river gorges and temples in the hills north of the coast, with a long tradition of painting, dance and craft. Ceremonies fill the calendar, and on any morning there are offerings at the gates and processions on the roads.

One of our stays here is Amandari, set in the village of Kedewatan above the Ayung River gorge. It was built in the manner of a Balinese village, with thatched suites behind stone walls, and the pool follows the line of the rice terraces toward the river. Village paths lead from the gate to the fields and the temple.

About forty minutes north, in the rainforest of Payangan above the Ayung River, Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape keeps sixteen open-air pool bales for adults, with no walls and no doors, a kitchen led by its own organic farm and exclusive access to the Tjampuhan waterfall.

Ubud suits first-time visitors to Bali, couples and families who want culture before beach, and travelers who like to walk. Amandari is part of our Temple Paths collection. It pairs naturally with East Bali or Nusa Dua for the coast, and with Central Java for Borobudur. Our Indonesia guide covers the wider archipelago. Amandari also belongs to our Sacred Journeys collection, for weeks shaped around Bali’s holy springs and ceremonies.

Why visit

A reason to make the journey.

  • Bali’s culture at the door Village temples, dance and craft workshops, with ceremonies throughout the year.
  • A village above the river Thatched suites behind stone walls, and views down into the Ayung gorge.
  • Walks through the rice Paths along ridges and terraces that begin at the hotel gate.

When and how

Light, season, and the arrival

Each season keeps its own calendar. We plan the transfer around it.

Best time to visit

When the light is right

The dry season, roughly April to October, brings clear mornings and the most comfortable walking. November to March is greener, with afternoon rain and lush terraces.

Seasonality

When to go

July, August and Christmas fill first. Nyepi, the Day of Silence in March, closes the island for a day. Galungan and Kuningan, which come round every 210 days, bring the villages out in their finest dress.

Airport / logistics

Arriving without hurry

Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) is the gateway, about an hour to an hour and a half away depending on traffic. East Bali is about an hour and a half from Ubud and Nusa Dua a little longer, so Ubud makes an easy first stop before the coast.

Month by month

The best months for Ubud

  • Peak
  • Quiet

Luxury experiences

Hours we would keep

  • The Campuhan ridge An early walk along the ridge between two rivers, before the heat.
  • Water temples Tirta Empul and its spring-fed pools, and the subak rice terraces of Jatiluwih, part of a UNESCO cultural landscape.
  • Dance and craft An evening of Balinese dance, and mornings with painters, carvers and silversmiths.

Traveler questions

Before your Ubud week

  • How far is Ubud from the airport? About an hour to an hour and a half by road from Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS), depending on traffic.
  • Is Ubud good for children? Yes. Rice field walks, craft workshops, dance and river rafting on the Ayung keep children busy, with the pool to return to.
  • When should we avoid travelling to Bali? Nyepi, the Day of Silence, closes the airport for a day each year, usually in March. Otherwise Bali is a year-round destination.
