The Experience

How the days feel

Andros is the largest island in the Bahamas and one of the least developed, a low green country cut through by tidal creeks and wide channels the islanders call bights. On its eastern shore, between Deep Creek and Little Creek, a pink plantation style house stands among coconut palms on a white sand beach, its skiffs moored a few steps from the veranda. This is Bair’s Lodge, a saltwater classic since 1989 and the benchmark for bonefishing on South Andros.

The sport is sight fishing for bonefish, the grey ghost of the flats. A five minute run north or south leads through the creek mouths into more than 120 square miles of flats, where fish average four to six pounds and it is common to meet them between six and ten. Some days are spent wading firm white sand after tailing singles; others poling the turtle grass and the mangrove edges, or running about fifty minutes through Little Creek to the West Side, protected as Andros West Side National Park, where the island’s largest bonefish push into skinny water on the right tide.

The days keep an easy rhythm. Coffee is out at half past six, the skiffs leave the dock at eight, and there is no trailer and no fuel stop between the front door and the fish. Lunch travels in the cooler. By late afternoon you are back on the sand for cocktail hour, appetizers on the veranda, and dinner from an à la carte menu built around the sea.

It is a small house, never more than twelve anglers, looked after by guides with more than 125 years of combined experience at Bair’s. Evenings end at the beachfront fire pit with a glass of wine, the palms moving overhead and the skiffs at rest for the morning.

The fishing

The creeks, the southern flats and the West Side

South Andros is widely regarded as one of the finest bonefishing destinations in the world, with vast ocean side flats and rich habitat in its sheltered creeks. Fish run from three to ten pounds, and permit and tarpon appear on occasion.

The creeks. Deep Creek to the north and Little Creek to the south are each five minutes by skiff, opening into more than 120 square miles of flats where bonefish average four to six pounds, and a refuge when the wind rises.

The West Side. About fifty minutes through Little Creek, within Andros West Side National Park: the island’s largest bonefish, singles and doubles near the ten pound mark, pushing into skinny water on good tides.

The southern flats. Grassy Creek is about forty five minutes away, and weather permitting the run continues to Hawksbill Creek and Cistern Point: endless wadeable flats, large schools and very few other skiffs.

Boats and guides. Seventeen foot Maverick flats skiffs for two anglers and a guide, with poling platforms, casting decks and lean bars. Each day is planned with you, wading or from the bow, big singles or schools. Rods, reels and lines are provided, and the lodge fly shop stocks the rest.

Beyond the flats. Blue holes within reach of the lodge draw blacktip and lemon sharks, jacks, barracuda and snapper.

Best for

Anglers who want the flats, and a house to come home to

  • Two travelers

Dedicated bonefish anglers. Lightly pressured fish, excellent wading and a real chance at a double digit bonefish on the West Side.

Friends who fish together. Never more than twelve anglers and two to a skiff, so the week is shared with a few like minded people, or with your own party.

Pairs who both fish. Two anglers share each skiff and guide, a natural fit for a couple or two friends.

Every level of experience. Guides give as much or as little instruction as you want, from ironing out a double haul to reading a tailing fish in inches of water.

Good to know. Non anglers are welcome at the lodge. The full program does not fish on arrival or departure days, though a half day can sometimes be arranged in advance.

From Florida. Scheduled flights from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport reach South Andros in about an hour and twenty minutes, usually with a morning and an afternoon departure. Private charters fly from Florida directly to South Andros (MYAK).

Via Nassau. Short domestic flights link Nassau with Congo Town in about twenty minutes on set days; allow at least an hour and a half in Nassau for immigration and customs before the onward flight.

The first afternoon. Settle into your room, rig your rods and enjoy the lodge grounds; fishing begins the next morning.

Your advisor sequences the flights and the transfer with your dates.

When to go

October to June on the flats

The lodge is open from October to June, and each season fishes differently.

Fall, October to December. Little pressure after the late summer storms, variable skies and closer shots; some of the largest bonefish of the year are landed now.

Winter, January and February. More sunshine, cooler water and the windiest days; large schools hold on the edges of the flats and catch rates can be the highest of the season, with the inland creeks for shelter.

Spring, March to May. Peak season: warm, settled and bright, with glassy calm days and tailing fish in ankle deep water, the most rewarding sight fishing of the year.

June. Warm and sunny, with schools in deeper water and the best chance of the season at a permit.

Your advisor confirms dates and the right weeks for the way you like to fish.
