The Experience

How the days feel

Las Alamandas lies on a quiet stretch of the Pacific in Jalisco, about two and a half hours south of Puerto Vallarta, at the end of a cobblestone drive lined with the golden copa de oro flowers that give the place its name. Isabel Goldsmith created it in 1990 as a private retreat where nature and comfort could share the same ground, and it has kept that scale: eleven suites at the start, eighteen today, on a reserve of more than two thousand acres.

The architecture is contemporary Mexican, low and generous, painted in the colours of the coast. Casitas in pink, cobalt and saffron open onto terraces with hammocks and deep sofas, set among palms, fountains and wide lawns that run to the sand. Inside are king beds with Egyptian cotton, marble bathrooms with deep tubs and handcrafted details, and several suites keep a jacuzzi or a plunge pool of their own.

Beyond the gardens the land stays wild. Four beaches belong to the reserve, from the curve of sand in front of the resort to Playa Soledad, a kilometre and a half of empty shore nearly four kilometres away. The San Nicolás river forms a calm lagoon where more than a hundred species of birds have been recorded, and from summer into January sea turtles come ashore to nest.

The days are shaped around the guest. Breakfast at La Palapa on the sand, a ride on horseback through the reserve, lunch under a beach palapa, a massage beside the sea, then cocktails on the blue rooftop of Estrella Azul as the sun goes down and dinner by candlelight in the garden at Oasis.

When to go

Dry winters, turtle autumns

Las Alamandas is open all year, and the coast changes with the seasons.

Winter and spring. The dry months bring blue skies, calm evenings and the high season, when the Estrella Azul rooftop opens for sunset and a telescope comes out for the stars.

Summer. Warm rains turn the hills green, the first sea turtles come ashore to nest and the reserve has a lush, quiet beauty.

Autumn. Nesting continues to the end of the year and sometimes into January, and six to eight weeks later the hatchlings make for the sea. Guests can join the programme, from guarding the nests to the release.
