The Experience

How the days feel

Ushuaia is the city at the end of the world: a harbor on the island of Tierra del Fuego, at the foot of the Fuegian Andes, facing the Beagle Channel. Snow lies on the peaks for much of the year, forests of lenga, ñire and coihue climb toward the glaciers, and the channel carries boats past cormorant colonies, sea lions and the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse.

Los Cauquenes stands on the shore of that channel in Bahía Cauquén, a private neighborhood 7 km from the city, with the mountains rising behind it. It belongs to the Álvarez Argüelles Hoteles group, and its buildings of lenga wood and stone follow the local way of building and the principles of bioclimatic architecture. There are 48 rooms, ten of them suites, each with a view of the Beagle Channel or the Andes, and direct access to a private beach on the channel.

The house is made for the weather. Breakfast is laid out in Reinamora above the water; afternoon tea is served before the fire in the Wine Bar; the glass rooms of the Winter Garden and Jardines del Canal hold the light of long southern evenings; and the Spa del Fin del Mundo keeps an indoor and outdoor pool, jacuzzis and a sauna facing the channel. In winter there is a playroom for children, and from October to April bicycles for guests.

What sets it apart is the way it opens the island. Under the name Ushuaia by Los Cauquenes, the hotel runs its own menu of experiences with its own guides, vehicles, equipment and kitchen: sailing the Beagle Channel aboard its boat, the Akawaia, to the penguin colony of Martillo Island, the End of the World Train through Tierra del Fuego National Park, treks to Martial Glacier and Laguna Esmeralda, the lakes Escondido and Fagnano, and in winter snowmobiles and a dinner in a dome in the mountains. Your Exclusive Villa Collection advisor arranges the stay directly with Los Cauquenes and shapes the days around the season and your party.

Dining

King crab, black hake and the channel at the window

The kitchen cooks with what the end of the world provides: fish and seafood from the Beagle Channel and the Argentine Sea brought in by local fishermen, bread and pastry made in house, organic honey and cage-free eggs, and herbs from the hotel’s own greenhouse.

Reinamora. The restaurant joins the dishes of Patagonia with an international touch, with the Beagle Channel in every window. Fuegian king crab, served as a duo or gratinated with Parmesan; black hake with rhubarb and a citrus criolla; Fuegian cured trout; a caldereta of Beagle Channel fish and seafood; Fuegian lamb stew.

The Wine Bar. Distinguished and regional wines before the fireplace, in a lounge overlooking the channel, with an afternoon tea of artisanal pastries and smoked dishes.

Glass rooms. The Winter Garden, intimate and warm with panoramic views of the channel and the mountains, and Jardines del Canal, two inviting spaces facing the Beagle Channel.

On the water. Aboard the Akawaia, the hotel serves a three-course menu on the Beagle Channel sail, a Southern Tea at dusk, and a gourmet dinner of Fuegian flavors prepared by its executive chef as the sunset colors the channel.
