The Experience

How the days feel

Hvar is long, narrow and famously sunny, and its north shore is the quieter one: pine forest down to the water, olive terraces, the old stone of Stari Grad, and the Stari Grad Plain behind it, farmed in the same Greek field pattern for twenty four centuries. Maslina Resort sits in the crook of Maslinica Bay on two hectares of that pine forest, and its three villas stand apart along the shore, each with its own gate, garden and pool.

The architecture is by Aalto, the Split studio, and the interiors by LA.M Studio in Paris: scattered pavilions in larch, terracotta and Brač stone, linen and oak inside, glass opened wide to the Adriatic. Villa Litica rises on the slope above the bay, Villa Borovina keeps to the shade of the pines, and Villa Uvala, the largest, sits right on the shoreline with a fifty five square metre infinity pool above the water.

The days take the shape you choose. A chef in your kitchen or a table at Terra, the resort’s MICHELIN Guide restaurant; a morning of yoga or a Biologique Recherche facial at Pharomatiq Wellness; a private speedboat to the Pakleni Islands or to Vis; an evening walk along the coast path into Stari Grad for a glass on the harbour. In between, the pool, the hammock and the sound of the cicadas.

Because the villas share the resort’s services, privacy never means doing without: sommelier, spa, beach and concierge are all a short walk through the garden, and nothing comes to the villa unless you ask for it.

The table

Terra, the garden and your own kitchen

In the villa. Every kitchen is built to restaurant standard, so a private chef can cook for you at home, from a long lunch under the pines to dinner by the pool, with a sommelier to bring up bottles from the resort’s cellar.

Terra. The resort’s restaurant, listed in the MICHELIN Guide, pairs classic French technique with the produce of the Mediterranean and of its own organic garden of 7,000 square metres, in a room of warm terracotta. It honours the Mediterranean diet that UNESCO protects.

The Bar and A•Bay. The Bar pours Champagne Thiénot and cocktails built on Hvar’s herbs and fruit; from June, the A•Bay Beach Bar opens on the sand facing the Kabal peninsula.

By the sea. A private platform on the water can be set for dinner for two or for the whole house.

Wellbeing

Pharomatiq Wellness and the healing herbs of Hvar

The resort’s spa takes its name from Pharos, the Greek name for Stari Grad, and from the aromatic herbs that have made Hvar a place of healing since the Hvar Health Society was founded in 1868.

Treatments. Biologique Recherche facials, traditional massage and signature rituals built on island herbs, among them the Adriatic Rejuvenation and a treatment for couples.

Movement. Hatha, Vinyasa and Ashtanga yoga, assisted stretching, sound healing, and personal training that can begin with a biomarker assessment, in a fitness space equipped by Nordh and Matrix.

At home. Villa Uvala adds its own Finnish sauna, jacuzzi and fitness room; every villa has a heated pool and an outdoor shower in the garden.

Sea and islands

The Adriatic from your own pool

The pools. Each villa has its own heated pool: thirty one square metres at Litica, twenty five at Borovina and a fifty five square metre infinity pool at Uvala, with the bay just beyond. The resort adds two heated pools and a beach on the bay.

By speedboat. The Pakleni Islands off Hvar town, the island of Vis and the coves of Brač are all within reach for a day on the water, with swimming stops wherever the water is clearest.

On the island. Private wine tastings in the island’s vineyards, the dry stone terraces of the Stari Grad Plain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old ethno villages of the interior and, in early summer, the lavender of Velo Grablje.

When to go

Spring to mid October

Hvar counts some 2,800 hours of sunshine a year, and the resort opens for the season from spring into mid October.

Late spring. May and June bring warm days, a cool sea and, from June, the lavender in flower and the beach bar open.

High summer. July and August are hot and lively, with the Hvar Summer Festival and the island at its busiest; the villas are the calm side of it.

September and October. The sea at its warmest, the grape harvest in the vineyards and quieter roads.

Your advisor confirms the villas’ opening dates and the best weeks when you inquire.
