The Experience

How the days feel

At the northern head of Lake Wakatipu, just past the small town of Glenorchy, Blanket Bay Lodge keeps the shore of Wyuna, a 60,000-acre high-country station at the foot of the Richardson Mountains. The Villa stands on the hill above the Lodge and its Chalets, its gabled pavilions of stone and timber turned west across the water to the Humboldt and Thomson ranges. Just up the road lies the quiet valley they call Paradise.

Inside are four King suites, each a private world of bedroom, sitting area and bathroom around its own stone fireplace, and between them the shared rooms of the house: a grand lounge beneath a vaulted timber ceiling, a bar, a long dining table and a full commercial kitchen. The house was drawn to follow the sun through the morning and the afternoon, and at every turn it opens onto terraces, courtyards, a fire pit and twin hot tubs on the lawn.

The rhythm is yours. A chef cooks in the Villa at any hour, from fresh produce of the region, for breakfast on the terrace or dinner under the stars. When you want company, the Lodge is a short walk or buggy ride down the hill: cocktails in the Den, five courses in the dining room, the spa and steam rooms, and the heated pool in summer. Beyond the lawns are jet boats on the Dart River, horses in the high country, helicopters bound for Milford Sound, and the trailheads of the Great Walks.

Your Exclusive Villa Collection advisor reserves the Villa directly with Blanket Bay, as two bedrooms or four, and shapes the week around who is coming, from the first drive up the lake to the morning you fly out of Queenstown.

Inside the stay

The house, in notes

Where you sleep, what you eat, and how you arrive: the essentials, in brief.

The Villa

Two bedrooms, or four

Some 1,000 square meters of stone and timber on the hill above the Lodge and Chalets, designed to catch the morning and the afternoon sun, and for living outdoors as much as in.

The Four Bedroom Villa. All four King suites and the whole house, for up to eight guests.

The Two Bedroom Villa. Two King suites for up to four guests, with the same grand lounge, bar, kitchen and outdoor living.

Shared spaces. A grand lounge, bar and dining rooms around a full commercial kitchen; outside, lounge areas, courtyards, private terraces, a fire pit and twin hot tubs on the lawn.

For your own staff. Personal helpers stay in the Villa’s security suite, so service runs seamlessly around you.

Private dining

A chef in the house

Private dining in the Villa is part of every Two and Four Bedroom stay.

In the Villa. An onsite chef cooks from the full commercial kitchen at any time of day, with fresh produce from around the region, for the long table inside or the terraces under the stars.

At the Lodge. When you want the room, walk down for cocktails and canapés in the Den, then the Lodge’s five-course degustation, contemporary Euro-Pacific cooking that changes every day, in the formal dining room or on the terrace.

Smaller tables. The Lodge’s Wine Cave seats up to four and its Tasting Room up to six, and an outdoor fireplace setting holds the long summer evenings.

The Lodge & wellbeing

Down the hill, the Lodge

Blanket Bay Lodge, a short walk or buggy ride below the Villa, is built in the grand alpine manner, of native timber and stone, with beamed ceilings and open log fires.

The spa. A therapy suite for massage with organic oils and balms, Manuka honey facials, and private workshops of yoga, breathwork and meditation.

Water and warmth. Steam rooms, an indoor jacuzzi and a gym with lake and mountain views, and in the summer months an 18-meter heated outdoor pool open to the lake.

Lodge pleasures. The Great Room under its thirty-foot ceiling, a games room, pétanque and garden chess on the lawns, bicycles, and two short walks along the lakefront from the jetty.

Experiences

Paradise, and beyond

Blanket Bay lies on the edge of one of the great alpine wildernesses of the Southern Hemisphere, and the Lodge builds a bespoke itinerary around you, for adrenaline or for rest.

On the water. Jet boats from the Lodge’s private dock up the braided, glacier-fed Dart River into Mount Aspiring National Park, back downstream by Funyak, an easy inflatable kayak that suits families, or river canyoning.

On foot and on horseback. Horse treks through the high country, ancient beech forest you may know from The Lord of the Rings, and the Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, which starts near Glenorchy.

By helicopter. From the private heli-pad to Milford Sound and Fiordland, to remote South Island rivers for fly-fishing, and in winter to untracked powder for heli-skiing.

Further afield. Queenstown, the wineries of the Southern Lakes, the Wine, Food & Arts Trail, and five golf courses within an hour’s drive.

Up the lake from Queenstown

Blanket Bay lies just outside Glenorchy at the northern head of Lake Wakatipu, about forty minutes by road from Queenstown.

On arrival. The Villa is a short walk or buggy ride from the Main Lodge. Your advisor sequences flights and transfers with the stay.

Seasonality

The Villa is open through the year, and every season changes the lake.

Summer. January to April brings long days for the rivers, the trails and the horses, and the Lodge’s heated outdoor pool is open through the summer months.

Winter. May to September brings snow to the ranges, open fires, and heli-skiing from Blanket Bay’s doorstep; golf is played all year.

Spring. October to mid-December, with snow still on the peaks and the days lengthening toward summer.

Festive weeks. Late December into early January is the most sought-after time; your advisor confirms availability when you inquire.
