The Experience

How the days feel

The Vines lies in Los Chacayes, in the department of Tunuyán, at the heart of the Uco Valley, Argentina’s most renowned wine country. Here the vineyards run west until the Andes rise straight out of them. It began in 2005 as The Vines of Mendoza, a way for people who love wine to own a vineyard of their own in the valley; today some 1,500 acres are planted and tended for their owners, and the resort opened among them in 2014.

There are thirty-three villas, designed by the Argentine architects Bormida & Yanzon in wood and stone, each with a private deck and a view of the mountains or the vines, and most with an outdoor firepit. The twelve Andes Condor Villas are the largest: 271 square meters over two levels, with unobstructed views of the Andes and a pool of their own. Further into the vineyard, The Sanctuary is a secluded residence for a family or four couples, with its own pool and wellness area and the full service of the resort.

Wine is the thread through every day. You might blend and hand-bottle a wine of your own, spend a harvest day picking and stomping grapes beside the winemakers, or taste through the Winemakers Village, a gathering of specialty wineries within the resort. There are horses at sunrise toward Manzano Histórico, treks into the foothills, a five-kilometer trail through the vines, and in the evening the seven fires of Siete Fuegos, where Francis Mallmann’s cooking meets the valley’s produce and its wines.

Your Exclusive Villa Collection advisor arranges the stay directly with The Vines, from an Andes Condor Villa for two to the whole of The Sanctuary, and shapes the tastings, the tables and the days in the valley around the week you want.

Dining & wine

Fire, and the wines of the valley

Francis Mallmann designs every menu at The Vines, and the kitchen follows the gardens and the surrounding vineyards through the seasons.

Siete Fuegos. Named for Mallmann’s seven open-fire techniques, born of the gauchos and refined over centuries: slow-grilled rib eye, salt-crusted fish, seasonal fruit charred over the coals. Dine indoors or out, or at the 28-seat shared table of the Patio de Fuegos, in sight of the fires.

Private tables. A chef’s table in the middle of the kitchen, with a sommelier pouring a different Argentine wine for each course; dinner for two among the vines, under the stars; an empanada class with one of the chefs.

The wine. A list recognized many times by Wine Spectator, tastings of the estate’s own wines at Vines to Go, and the specialty wineries of the Winemakers Village within the resort.

Wellbeing

Quiet at the foot of the Andes

The spa works with natural products and with the landscape itself: the vineyards, the Andes and some of the purest air in the country.

Treatments. Deep-tissue, lymphatic and relaxing massages, a lavender facial, hydrating body rituals with grape seed oil and grape flour or rosemary and olive oil, a thirty minute express massage, or a massage in the privacy of your villa.

Retreats. Wellness retreats shaped around your own goals, for a day or across a stay.

Movement and water. Yoga at the foot of the Andes, a gym above the vineyards, and an outdoor pool and jacuzzi facing the mountains as the sky turns red and violet.

Experiences

The valley, by hand and on horseback

In the vineyard. A blending session to create, and hand-bottle, a Uco Valley wine of your own; Wine Camp at harvest, from picking and sorting to punch-downs and grape stomping; varietal and oak tastings with the wine team.

The Winemakers Village. A cluster of boutique wineries within the resort, the personal projects of celebrated winemakers from Argentina and the Napa Valley: Gimenez Riili, Solo Contigo, Corazón del Sol, the biodynamic SuperUco of the Michelini brothers, and La Vigilia, for private tastings, tours and long lunches.

On horseback. A ride under the last of the stars to a hilltop near Manzano Histórico for sunrise, with mate and pancakes, at its best from October to April; a sunset ride into the foothills, at its best from April to October; or a short ride through the resort’s own vineyards.

Into the Andes. Treks from Paso Los Puntanos to the waterfalls of Guardia Vieja and the granite canyon of Cajón de los Arenales, with a picnic on the way; bicycles on the five-kilometer trail through the vines.

Beyond the estate. Wine tours for two to Uco Valley houses such as Salentein, Zuccardi Valle de Uco, Domaine Bousquet, Andeluna and Clos de los Siete, or north to Catena Zapata, Susana Balbo and Casa Vigil in Luján de Cuyo and Maipú, with lunch if you wish and a private driver on request.

More ways out. A two hour 4×4 drive into the mountains to the Paso Sanmartiniano, a climbing gym for beginners and experts alike, and a fly fishing clinic.

The Vines lies on Ruta Provincial 94 in Los Chacayes, Tunuyán, in the heart of the Uco Valley, south of the city of Mendoza.

By air. Mendoza’s international airport (MDZ) is about ninety minutes from the resort by road. Mendoza is reached by domestic flights from Buenos Aires and by a short flight across the Andes from Santiago de Chile.

Seasonality

The year in the vineyard

The Uco Valley keeps the Southern Hemisphere’s seasons, and the vineyard sets the calendar.

Harvest. Late summer into autumn, roughly February to April, is the season of Wine Camp: picking, sorting and stomping grapes beside the winemakers.

Autumn and winter. The vines turn gold beneath the mountains, then snow settles on the Andes and the firepits and fireplaces come into their own.

Spring and summer. From September the vines leaf again, and the long, dry days end with sunsets from the pool. Your advisor confirms dates with The Vines when you inquire.
