The Experience

How the days feel

Hotel Villa Honegg stands on its own on the Bürgenstock, the wooded ridge that rises out of Lake Lucerne in the heart of Switzerland, 914 metres above sea level. From its meadow the lake opens out below and the mountains stand all around. In the cooler months the valley can fill with a sea of cloud, and the house sits above it in the light.

The villa was built in 1905 by Emil Durrer, a carpenter from Kerns who had learned hotel-keeping on the Bürgenstock and abroad, and who planned it himself, without an architect. It opened in 1906 with 72 beds. Guests came from all over the world for three or four weeks at a time, some for the whole summer, and were met at the top of the Bürgenstock cable car by horse and carriage. Three generations of the family kept the house. After several years of restoration in private ownership it reopened in May 2011, and in 2026 it celebrates its 120th year.

The restoration kept the substance of the listed building and its Art Nouveau character, and added what a house of this kind needs today: twenty-five rooms and suites finished in natural materials, a spa built around a heated outdoor infinity pool, a restaurant and sun terrace, Bar «1905», a salon and a cigar lounge with open fires, and a small cinema of its own. A lake water heat pump warms the house, and in 2026 Villa Honegg received the ibex fairstay award for Best Performance.

It is a quiet place, by design. Ennetbürgen is five kilometres below, Lucerne half an hour away by car, and the days pass between the pool, the walks along the ridge and the lake, with dinner on the terrace as the light leaves the water.

The table

From the garden and the farms around it

The kitchen cooks to a concept it calls HONexquisite: regional produce, craftsmanship and the history of the house, prepared creatively and with the seasons.

The restaurant. Lunch and dinner are served in the restaurant and, in summer, outside with the lake below, with first-rate wines from the region. Tables are by reservation, for hotel guests as for everyone.

From the house. An alpine herb garden at 914 metres and three beehives beside the villa supply the kitchen, and meat and vegetables come, wherever possible, from farms within walking distance.

Breakfast. A regional breakfast is served each morning until eleven.

Bar «1905» and the lounges. Opened for the 120th anniversary, Bar «1905» serves the house’s own signature drinks. The salon and the cigar lounge each keep an open fire, for a glass of wine or whisky after dinner.

The sun terrace. From March, weather permitting, the terrace serves aperitifs, coffee, desserts and light dishes through the afternoon.

The Honegg Stübli. From November to March, a room for up to ten serves cheese fondue and fondue chinoise, with cheese and meat from the surrounding farms and everything else made in the house.

The spa

A warm pool at 914 metres

The spa is the heart of a stay here, and its outdoor pool is the image most guests carry home.

The infinity pool. Heated to 34°C and open in every season, the outdoor pool looks straight out over the mountains and Lake Lucerne, or over the sea of cloud that sometimes fills the valley below.

Indoors. A relaxation room with loungers and a panoramic window, a bio sauna at 55°C and a Finnish sauna at 85°C.

Treatments. Personalised massages and treatments with Jacqueline Piotaz products, booked on arrival or in advance.

The gym. Technogym equipment, with Power Plate and Kinesis, for those who keep their routine.

Good to know. A limited number of day guests are admitted to the spa, by reservation only and according to hotel occupancy.

Around the lake

The ridge, the lake and Lucerne

The Bürgenstock is walking country, and Lake Lucerne and its mountains are all within a short drive.

On foot. The Felsenweg, the rock path the villa’s builder joined to the hotel with a route of his own, leads to the Hammetschwand lift. Further afield, the Stanserhorn, Klewenalp, Pilatus, Rigi and Engelberg each make a day in the mountains.

On the water. A boat trip on Lake Lucerne, or a morning by canoe.

From the air. A helicopter flight over the Swiss Alps, arranged on request.

Lucerne. Half an hour by car: the Chapel Bridge and Water Tower, the Lion Monument, the Old Town and the Musegg Wall, the Swiss Museum of Transport and the KKL.

In the house. Art exhibitions and concerts through the year, a selection of Swiss films in the cinema, and bicycles to borrow.

Couples, families and small celebrations

Families. Children are welcome, and top-floor Classic Rooms and Superior Rooms can connect to the room next door.

Wellbeing. Days organised around the pool, the saunas, treatments and the walks along the Bürgenstock.

Celebrations. The whole house can be reserved for weddings and private occasions of up to 60 guests, with the restaurant, the sun terrace or the meadow above the lake for the celebration. Ceremonies held here are symbolic rather than legal.

When to go

Every season, a different view

Villa Honegg is open all year, and the pool is warm in every season.

Summer. The house’s first season, when guests once stayed for weeks: long days on the terrace, lunch outside, and the walks and the lake at their best.

Autumn. Golden light over the lake and, below the villa, a layer of cloud in the valley on many mornings. The autumn menu follows the harvest.

Winter. Snow on the meadow and the firs, open fires in the salon and the cigar lounge, fondue in the Honegg Stübli from November to March, and the warm pool under a cold sky.

Spring. The sun terrace reopens from March, weather permitting, and the meadow turns green again.
